Open toolWhat is the roxzone?
The roxzone is the transition area between each run and its station. Your clock keeps running through it, so every second spent walking, queuing for a station or finding your lane counts toward your finish time. Over a race that adds up to several minutes, and it is the one part of the clock you can shorten without getting fitter. Your finish time is runs plus stations plus roxzone.

Roxzone by finish time
Slower finishers spend longer in the roxzone, so a fair comparison uses your pace. Open Men in 5-minute finish-time bands (bands with fewer than 100 athletes are left out). Faster athletes also move through it quicker, which is why the calculator compares you with your own band.

Roxzone by venue
Median Open Men roxzone at 91 venues with at least 100 Open Men split records, shortest first (87,324 athletes in all). The across-venue median is 6:36. "Vs same pace" compares each venue with athletes of the same finish time elsewhere, so a long roxzone is not just a slow field: London Excel runs +4:52 longer than athletes of the same pace, Katowice −1:51.

How to cut roxzone time
At the median pace for 1:20 to 1:25, the gap between the median (6:31) and a quicker-than-3-in-4 roxzone (5:43) is about 48 seconds. These habits are where athletes usually find it:
- Know the order of stations and where each one sits relative to the run exit, so you head to the right lane without looking.
- Settle your breathing on the run in, so you are ready to start the station when you arrive, rather than recovering at it.
- Have wall ball, sandbag and sled weights for your division memorised so you do not wait at the station to check.
- On a doubles or relay start line, agree where the handoff happens before the race, not during it.
Treat these as practical habits, not measured effects: the data shows how long roxzones are, not which behaviours shorten them. For the stations themselves, use the finish time predictor to see where else the time goes, and the race speed index to pick a venue with a short roxzone.
Methodology
The roxzone total is derived: finish time minus run total minus station total, for finishers whose results carry both splits. We keep results where the derived value is between 0 and 20 minutes and the finish is between 45 minutes and 4 hours, and drop test and duplicate rows. That leaves 159,232 finishers (87,744 Open Men, 38,474 Open Women, 22,407 Pro Men, 10,607 Pro Women) from standard races. Championship fields and races with truncated result lists are excluded.
Your percentile is the share of athletes with a longer roxzone than yours, read from a percentile grid every 5%, within your division and age group, or within the 5-minute finish band you enter. Venue differences mix layout and timing set-up, which the results cannot separate. Because roxzone is the remainder, it also contains any time between mats that is neither running nor a station. FAQ
Roxzone time FAQ
What is the roxzone in HYROX?
The roxzone is the marked transition area between each 1 km run and the next station. You walk or jog through it to reach the station, and the clock keeps running. Added up over the race, it is a few minutes: the median Open Men total is 6:41 in our results.
What is a good roxzone time?
Compare with athletes who finish at your pace, because roxzone grows with finish time: 4:01 median for sub-1:00 finishers, 6:31 at 1:20 to 1:25, 13:41 near 2:35. Under the median for your pace is good. The calculator shows your percentile at your pace.
Is roxzone included in my run time?
No. The runs and the stations are timed separately, and roxzone is what remains: finish time minus run total minus station total. That makes it the time spent between mats that is neither a run nor a station. In our data the run and station totals do not include it.
Why does roxzone differ between venues?
Layout and timing mat position change what counts as roxzone. Among venues with at least 100 Open Men with splits, the median runs from 4:08 at Katowice to 11:26 at Delhi. Part of that is venue design and part is how the venue was timed.
How much time can I save in the roxzone?
Matching the 25th percentile for your pace is a realistic target. At 1:20 to 1:25 that is 5:43 against a 6:31 median, about 48 seconds. It costs no extra fitness, only tighter transitions. The calculator shows the seconds for your own total.
