Hyrox Doubles
Split Planner
In Hyrox doubles, give the larger share of each station to the partner who is faster at it, but not all of it: a rested partner works faster in short blocks. Enter both partners' solo times and get reps and metres per partner for all 8 stations, plus the time saved versus a 50/50 split.

Open toolHow do Hyrox doubles stations work?
Both partners run every 1 km together, then enter each station together, share the work however they like and leave together. The stations stay in the standard order, and weights follow the division rather than the partner. Under the "You-Go-I-Go" format one partner works while the other rests on their feet, and you swap at distances or reps you choose.
- Run together for the whole 1 km between stations. Running ahead is a 1-minute penalty, and more than 3 such penalties makes the team Out of Competition.
- The workout cannot begin until both partners are in the station, and you exit together after the full distance or reps are done.
- Wall ball hand-overs must go via the floor or a hand-off. A flying transition counts as a no-rep.
- Mixed Doubles use the Men's Open weights for both partners. See Hyrox weights by division.

How much faster are doubles teams at each station?
Median Doubles Men are 41% faster than median Open Men on Burpee Broad Jumps and 7% faster on RowErg, with the biggest gains on the heavy stations. These real median splits are what the planner's fatigue model is built from.
| Station | Open Men (solo) | Doubles Men (team) | Team faster by | Women: faster by | Fatigue exponent |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SkiErg | 4:27 | 3:59 | 11% | 9% | 1.16 |
| Sled Push | 2:52 | 1:45 | 39% | 35% | 1.68 |
| Sled Pull | 4:41 | 3:10 | 32% | 26% | 1.51 |
| Burpee Broad Jumps | 5:15 | 3:06 | 41% | 35% | 1.70 |
| RowErg | 4:46 | 4:25 | 7% | 5% | 1.11 |
| Farmers Carry | 2:02 | 1:36 | 21% | 16% | 1.31 |
| Sandbag Lunges | 5:00 | 3:24 | 32% | 27% | 1.52 |
| Wall Balls | 6:28 | 4:10 | 36% | 32% | 1.61 |

How the doubles split planner works
The planner finds the split that minimises combined station time, using a fatigue model whose exponent comes from the data. If a partner whose solo time is t does a fraction x of the station, that work takes them t × x^p, because shorter blocks are done at a faster average pace. Two equal partners splitting 50/50 therefore take t × 2^(1-p) in total.
We solve for p per station by comparing median Doubles station times with median Open (solo) times of the same gender, and dividing out overall ability using the running total, since everyone runs the same 8 km:
p = 1 - log2( (doubles / open) ÷ (doubles run / open run) ). A higher exponent means fatigue matters more, so splitting helps more and the best split stays close to even; a value near 1 means fatigue barely matters, splitting helps little and the faster partner should simply do more. For Mixed Doubles we use the average of the men's and women's exponents.
Worked example
Partner A takes 5:30 for 100 wall balls alone and Partner B takes 7:00. The planner suggests 60 reps for A and 40 for B, estimating 4:02 as a team against 4:06 for 50/50, a saving of about 5 seconds. On a 1,000 m SkiErg with 4:00 and 5:00 solo times the planner suggests 750 m and 250 m and a saving of about 11 seconds.
Limits you should know about
- The exponents come from team versus solo medians, not from the same athletes racing both ways, so they describe typical gains.
- Hand-over time is not modelled; real teams lose a few seconds per swap.
- Splits are capped at 75/25 and rounded to practical units (12.5 m sled lanes, 5 reps, 50 m on the erg).
- Doubles teams are not a random sample of athletes, so the savings are an estimate.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you split the stations in Hyrox doubles?
Give each station to the partner who is faster at it, but share the work rather than giving them all of it. A rested partner works faster in short blocks, so the best split is usually uneven but not extreme. Enter both partners' solo times in the planner for a rep and distance split for each of the 8 stations.
Do both partners run every kilometre in Hyrox doubles?
Yes. Both partners must run together for the whole 1 km between stations. If one runs ahead, a 1-minute penalty applies, and more than 3 penalties for not staying together makes the team Out of Competition. The stations are the only place the work can be divided.
What does "You-Go-I-Go" mean in Hyrox doubles?
It is the doubles station format: one partner works while the other rests, and they switch at distances or rep counts they choose themselves. For a 1,000 m row, for example, one partner might row 250 m, then swap, repeating until 1,000 m is covered. The resting partner must stay on their feet.
Does each partner have to do part of every station?
The Doubles rulebook lets partners choose their own switch points and does not set a per-partner minimum for a station. Both partners must enter the station together and leave together once the full distance or reps are complete, so the weaker partner still has to be present, resting on their feet.
How much time does splitting the stations save?
A lot compared with going solo. At median level, Doubles Men finish the stations far quicker than Open Men: wall balls 6:28 solo versus 4:10 as a team (36% faster), and sled push 2:52 versus 1:45. Within a team, picking an uneven split over 50/50 typically saves seconds per station, not minutes.
Which Hyrox stations benefit most from splitting?
The heavy, high-fatigue stations. Based on median times, the five biggest gains are Burpee Broad Jumps, Sled Push, Wall Balls, Sled Pull, Sandbag Lunges, led by Burpee Broad Jumps at 41% faster as a team than solo. RowErg benefits least (7%) because pacing a 1,000 m erg is less about fatigue from the reps.
Should the stronger partner always do more reps?
Usually, but not all of them. The planner caps any split at 75/25 because the model is built from pairs of similar ability, and a stronger partner who does everything is simply racing solo and gives up the rest benefit. For wall balls with times of 5:30 and 7:00, the planner suggests 60 reps and 40 reps.
How often should doubles partners switch?
There is no fixed rule, because the rulebook lets partners pick their own switch points. Each hand-over costs a few seconds and breaks rhythm, so fewer, larger blocks usually beat switching every few reps. The planner gives the total share per partner; split each share into blocks that keep both of you below the point where your pace drops.
What weights do Mixed Doubles use?
In Mixed Doubles both partners use the Men's Open weights: a 152 kg sled push, 103 kg sled pull, 2 x 24 kg farmers carry, 20 kg sandbag and 6 kg wall ball. Only the wall ball target differs, at 3.00 m for the man and 2.70 m for the woman. See every division in the Hyrox weights table.
How are wall balls handed over between doubles partners?
The ball must be passed by letting it hit the floor or by handing it between partners. A flying transition, where one partner throws and the other catches the ball in the squat and keeps moving, is not allowed and counts as a no-rep. Plan wall ball blocks so you can swap cleanly rather than rushing the exchange.
How accurate is the time-saved estimate?
Treat it as a guide, not a promise. The fatigue exponent for each station is derived from real Open and Doubles median splits, which compare teams with solo athletes rather than the same athletes in both formats. The tool ignores hand-over time and caps splits at 75/25, so real savings will usually be a little lower.
Does this planner work for Relay?
No. In a Relay each of the four athletes runs 2 x 1 km and completes two whole stations, so you assign whole stations rather than splitting reps. The doubles and relay guide covers how to assign legs.
