How Hyrox age groups work
Hyrox groups athletes into five-year age bands inside each division, using your age on race day, and ranks you against your own band as well as the whole field. The bands start at 16–24, then run 25–29, 30–34 and so on in five-year steps through the masters categories.
- Inside a division. You race in Open or Pro first, then your age band is a ranking category within it.
- No lighter weights. The weights are the same for every age in a division.
- Doubles. A pair is placed by a combined age measure, see the doubles section below.
- Exact bands change. Older bands and Pro age categories have been extended in recent seasons, so confirm the bands for your event.
Median Hyrox finish time by age group
The median Open Men time is 1:19:45 at 25–29 and 1:37:06 at 60–64, and each band is slower than the one before from 30–34 onwards. The table gives the median for each band, with the number of results in brackets.

How much slower do athletes get with age?
Open Men are roughly 3 minutes slower per five-year band between 40–44 and 60–64, and the full gap from 25–29 to 60–64 is about 17 minutes for men and 13 for women. The gaps widen from about age 50.
Our data cannot say how much of this is age and how much is who enters. Strength stations usually hold up better than running, which is why masters athletes should protect running volume. See the over-40 guide and the masters training article.
Doubles and age groups
In doubles the pair is placed in an age category by a combined measure, and sources for the current doubles rulebook describe it as the average of the two partners’ ages on race day. Confirm that in the official doubles rulebook before you enter, because it affects which category you can podium in.
For doubles rules and weights, see Hyrox doubles: rules and strategy.
Age groups and World Championships qualification
Qualification for the World Championships is set by the organisers and has changed between seasons, so we do not give a fixed criterion here. In recent seasons the invitations have depended on finishing position in your category at a sanctioned event.
Read the current official criteria and our World Championships page for the latest we have confirmed.
Finding your age category before you race
You choose your division when you enter, and the system places you in the age band for your age on race day. Check the band on your entry confirmation, and if you are near a birthday confirm which age applies.
To pick a division first see Hyrox divisions explained and Pro vs Open.
Common mistakes
These 5 mistakes cost the most time or the most training weeks, and each one has a simple fix.
- Assuming lighter weights with age. Weights are set by division, not age. A masters athlete in Open uses the Open weights.
- Comparing yourself with the whole field. Rank yourself in your own band. The median Open Men time at 50–54 is 1:30:07 and the median Open Women time is 1:35:08.
- Using the wrong age for doubles. Pairs are placed by a combined measure, not by the older or younger partner alone. Check the current doubles rulebook.
- Reading small samples as fact. Older bands have few finishers in our data, so their medians can jump around between seasons.
- Training like you did at 30. Recovery slows. Running volume is the biggest lever for masters athletes, see the masters guides.
Frequently asked questions
Each answer starts with the short version, with detail after it where it helps.
What are the Hyrox age groups?
Five-year bands: 16–24, 25–29, 30–34, 35–39, 40–44, 45–49, 50–54, 55–59, 60–64 and 65–69, with older bands where entries exist. Check the current rulebook for the exact bands at your event.
Which age do I use for my Hyrox category?
Your age on race day, according to the sources we checked. Confirm this in the current rulebook, particularly if you are close to a birthday.
Are the weights lighter for older athletes?
No. Weights are set by division, not by age. A 62-year-old in Open uses the Open weights.
How are doubles age groups decided?
Sources for the current doubles rulebook describe the pair’s age category as based on the average of the two partners’ ages on race day. Confirm the rule in the official doubles rulebook.
How much slower is Hyrox with age?
In our data the Open Men median rises by roughly 3 minutes per five-year band between 40–44 and 60–64, and the gap between 25–29 and 60–64 is about 17 minutes for men and 13 for women.
Can I qualify for the World Championships through my age group?
Qualification is handled by the organisers and has changed between seasons. See our World Championships page and the official site for the current criteria.
Bottom line
Age groups are ranking bands, not different weights. Use your band’s median to set a realistic target, race against your own category and read the current rulebook for exact bands, doubles pairing and qualification. Running volume is the main thing that slows with age, and strength work protects the stations.
