Hyrox Relay
Leg Optimizer

Put each athlete on the leg whose two stations suit them, and let the fastest runner take the leg where running costs the most. In the example below the best of the 24 possible orders is 1:18:37, which is 2:39 quicker than the worst order and 2:10 quicker than the order entered.

Leg time is 2 x your 1 km pace, your two stations and a quarter of the median roxzone time. Relay athletes are fresher than solo racers, so real legs are usually faster; the order is what matters. Next: if you race as a pair, use the doubles work-split planner, and check implement weights in weights by division.

How relay legs are structured

Each leg is two runs and the two stations after them, so the eight stations split into four pairs. The optimizer tries all 24 ways to hand the four legs to four athletes and keeps the fastest. The slowest leg is leg 4 and the quickest is leg 3 on median Open Men splits.

The four Hyrox relay legs and their reference times
Leg Runs Stations Open Men median Open Women median
Leg 1 Runs 1 and 2 SkiErg + Sled Push 18:59 20:50
Leg 2 Runs 3 and 4 Sled Pull + Burpee Broad Jumps 21:35 24:39
Leg 3 Runs 5 and 6 RowErg + Farmers Carry 18:27 20:30
Leg 4 Runs 7 and 8 Sandbag Lunges + Wall Balls 23:08 23:57

Weights are in weights by division. Confirm the leg order and hand-over rules in your event briefing.

Average relay times

Our results data has no relay finishers, so these are reference times, not measured relay averages. A leg is 2 km at the median Open pace, the median times for its two stations and a quarter of the median roxzone time. The four legs add up to 1:22:09 for a team of Open Men medians and 1:29:55 for Open Women medians.

Relay athletes only work for about a quarter of the race, so they are usually fresher than the same people racing solo. Treat the reference as a ceiling for a team of average club athletes, and see the doubles split planner if you share the work in a pair instead.

How it is calculated

For each athlete and each leg: leg time = 2 x the athlete's 1 km pace + the time for the leg's first station + the time for its second station + a quarter of the median roxzone time. Where you leave a station blank we use the median Open split for that station (Open Men, Open Women, or the average of both for Mixed), from 224,008 recorded results. Because one athlete is on the course at a time, team time is the sum of four legs, and the optimizer checks all 24 assignments exactly. There is no sampling or randomness.

The model ignores hand-over time and does not adjust for freshness or fatigue across legs. It assumes the leg structure above; check it against your event briefing. This is general planning information. RoxUpdates is independent and not affiliated with HYROX.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a Hyrox relay work?

A relay team has four athletes. Each athlete takes one leg, covering two of the eight 1 km runs and the two stations that follow them, in race order. Only one teammate is on the course at a time, so the team time is the sum of the four leg times. Check your event briefing for hand-over details.

Which relay leg is hardest?

On median Open splits, leg 4 is the hardest for most people: sandbag lunges and wall balls come last and take about 11:28 for Open Men. Leg 2 comes next with the sled pull and burpee broad jumps at about 9:56. Leg 3 is usually the shortest.

What is a good Hyrox relay time?

We have no relay results in our dataset, so we can only give a reference. Four median Open Men finishers running one leg each add up to about 1:22:09, and four Open Women to about 1:29:55. Fresh legs are usually quicker than that, so a team near those numbers is in a safe middle.

Who should do the first leg of a relay?

Leg 1 has the SkiErg and the sled push, so it suits a strong pusher with a good engine, and it sets the pace for the team. If your fastest runner is also a strong pusher, leg 1 is a natural fit. The optimizer decides this from your numbers rather than a rule.

Does the order of athletes really matter?

It does, but less than training does. In the example team the best and worst orders differ by 2:39, about 3.4% of the total. Teams with athletes of very different strengths gain most, while four similar athletes gain almost nothing from reordering.

Which weights does a relay team use?

Relay Men and Relay Women use the same implement weights as Open Men and Open Women. We could not verify weights for Mixed relay in the 26/27 rulebook, so check your event briefing. The tool uses median Open splits as a stand-in for any station you leave blank, so enter real times where you have them.
