How solo times turn into a Doubles time

We matched Doubles results to the same athletes' solo results and compared the two. The ratio is the team time divided by the average of the partners' solo times.

Calibration of Doubles team time against partners' solo times, by category
Category Matched teams Ratio
Doubles Men 1,063 0.86
Doubles Women 289 0.89
Doubles Mixed 1,592 0.88
Pro Doubles Men 817 0.89
Pro Doubles Women 232 0.92

A ratio of 0.86 means the team finished 14% faster than its partners' average solo time. Median solo is the median of the two partners' average solo time.

Who should do what in Doubles

Both partners run every kilometre together, so the work you can divide is on the 8 stations. Give the larger share of a station to whoever is faster at it, but not all of it: a partner who works in shorter blocks stays faster. The tool above lists a split for every station from your two times. For a plan tuned to each partner's real station times, use the Doubles Split Planner.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good HYROX Doubles Men time?

For Doubles Men, the median result is 1:11:49. Finishing in 1:05:05 or faster puts a team in the top quarter, and 1:00:07 or faster is the top 10% of 12,566 recorded results. A time near 1:20:34 is slower than three quarters of teams.

How much faster is doubles than singles?

Across 3,993 teams whose partners also raced solo, the median Doubles Men team finished 14% faster than the average of its two solo times. It was 11% for women, 12% for mixed, 11% for Pro men and 8% for Pro women.

Do both partners run every km in doubles?

Yes. Both partners run every 1 km together and enter each station together. The only place the work can be divided is the stations, where you can swap at distances or rep counts you choose. That is why a Doubles time is not simply half of two solo times.

How does the Doubles time predictor work?

It takes both partners' solo times and applies a regression fitted on 1,063 real Doubles Men teams whose partners both have a solo result. The fit explains 71% of the variation in team time, with a typical error of about 8%. The range shown is the 10th to 90th percentile.

Does the faster partner matter more in a Doubles team?

Only slightly. Each 1% of the faster partner's solo time moves the team time by 0.45%, against 0.40% for the slower partner. So both partners matter almost equally, which is why a big gap between partners costs less than you might expect, but it does cost.

Can I predict a Doubles time from a 5K instead?

Yes. Switch either partner to 5K time and the tool first converts it to a solo finish time with the finish time predictor model, then predicts the team time. A 5K misses strength, so the range is wider than with real solo times. A recent solo race is always the better input.

Methodology and sources

Average times come from 224,008 recorded HYROX results (seasons 7 and 8), by Doubles category. For the predictor we matched 3,993 Doubles teams to both partners' solo results (same or adjacent season) by athlete name, then fitted ln(team) = a + b1 ln(faster solo) + b2 ln(slower solo) for each category. For Mixed the two terms are the man's and the woman's solo times. The range shown is the 10th to 90th percentile of the fit's residuals, widened when a time is converted from a 5K.

Limits: the athletes who race both solo and Doubles are not a random sample, partners often race solo in a different season, and Pro Doubles Women has only 232 matched teams. Treat the result as a guide. RoxUpdates is independent and not affiliated with HYROX.
