How the tiers work
Your tier depends on your percentile inside your own age group, so a 55-year-old and a 28-year-old at the same percentile get the same tier. The age-graded score then says how that ranking compares with the peak-age group.
| Tier | Percentile in your age group |
|---|---|
| Elite | top 5% of your age group |
| Advanced | top 20% |
| Above average | faster than half the group |
| Average | middle of the field |
| Building | slowest fifth |
Methodology and sources
For Open Men, Open Women, Pro Men and Pro Women we build a finish-time ladder (percentiles 0 to 100) for every age group with at least 100 finishers, from 354,321 public race results in the RoxUpdates dataset (times under 45 minutes or over 4 hours are dropped as errors). Your time is placed in your age group's ladder by linear interpolation. The age-graded time is the time at the same percentile in the reference age group, which is the group with the fastest median (Open Men 25–29, Open Women 25–29, Pro Men 16–24, Pro Women 25–29). The score divides the reference group's 1st-percentile time by the age-graded time. This is distribution matching: it assumes no ageing curve, and it inherits who chooses to race. Older groups are smaller and self-selected, so the curve understates how much slower an average untrained person would be. Age comes from the registered age group on the results, not exact birth date. RoxUpdates is independent and not affiliated with HYROX. Data refreshed 2026-10-25.
FAQ
HYROX age-graded calculator FAQ
What is an age-graded HYROX score?
It restates your time as if you had raced in the peak-age group. We find your percentile inside your own age group, then read off the finish time at that same percentile in the fastest-median age group (25–29 for Open Men). The score compares that time with the top 1% of the peak group.
At what age do HYROX times slow down?
In our data Open Men medians are flat from 16 to 34 (1:24:03 to 1:23:38), then slow: 1:27:22 at 40 to 44, 1:32:27 at 50 to 54 and 1:36:18 at 55 to 59. Open Women follow the same shape.
What is a good HYROX time for over 50s?
For Open Men aged 50 to 54 the median is 1:32:27, the top 25% is under 1:22:29 and the top 10% under 1:15:30. For Open Women aged 50 to 54 the median is 1:38:45 and the top 10% is under 1:21:41.
How is this different from WMA-style age grading?
WMA factors come from world-record curves in other sports. This calculator uses only HYROX finishers: it matches your percentile in your age group to the same percentile in the peak-age group. The result reflects who actually races HYROX at each age, including who chooses to enter.
What do the tiers mean?
Tiers come from your percentile in your own age group: Elite is the top 5%, Advanced the top 20%, Above average the top half, Average the middle of the field and Building the slowest fifth. A 45-year-old and a 25-year-old at the same percentile get the same tier.
Does age grading work for Pro?
Yes, for Pro Men and Pro Women up to 55 to 59, where we have at least 100 Pro results per age group. Older Pro groups are too small to build a reliable curve, so the calculator tells you when a group is not available instead of guessing.
Is this an official HYROX score?
No. RoxUpdates is independent and not affiliated with HYROX. Official results rank athletes within age groups only. The age-graded score is our own comparison, built from public results, so you can compare yourself with athletes of a different age.
How much data is it based on?
188,637 Open Men, 101,803 Open Women and 43,718 Pro Men and 20,462 Pro Women finishes from public race results. Age groups with fewer than 100 finishers are left out of the ladder.
