Hyrox Age Group Divisions Explained

How age categories work, how ranking points are calculated, and what masters athletes need to know about qualifying for world championships.

By Mathias Berger · Last updated April 7, 2026

Overview

Hyrox offers official age group divisions that allow athletes to compete and rank against others in their specific age bracket. The categories run from 16 to 24 all the way through 70 plus, in 5-year increments from age 35 onward. Understanding how divisions work, how rankings are calculated, and how age groups affect qualification for world championships changes how you should approach your race entry and season planning.

Age Categories

Official Hyrox age group categories:

  • 16 to 24 (Junior)
  • 25 to 29
  • 30 to 34
  • 35 to 39
  • 40 to 44
  • 45 to 49
  • 50 to 54
  • 55 to 59
  • 60 to 64
  • 65 to 69
  • 70 plus

Age groups exist in Open, Pro, and Mixed Doubles divisions. Your category is based on your age on race day. You select your division (Open or Pro) at registration and your age group is automatically assigned.

How Ranking Works

Hyrox uses a performance points system that enables comparison across events of different sizes. Points are awarded based on your finish position within your age group and division at each sanctioned event. Points accumulate throughout your season. World Series events and larger events award more points than standard events. This means racing at more competitive events contributes more to your ranking even if your finish position is lower than it would be at a smaller event.

Masters Divisions

Masters athletes from 40 plus compete in age groups that typically have smaller fields than the open 25 to 34 categories. The 40 to 44 age group is usually the most competitive masters category at major events. Athletes in the 50 plus categories often find that consistent training over years allows them to remain genuinely competitive and place within their age group at events where younger Open fields are enormous. Masters world championship participation has grown significantly over recent seasons.

World Championship Qualification

Qualification for the Hyrox World Championships runs through season rankings. Athletes accumulate points by finishing within the top positions of their age group and division at sanctioned events throughout the season. The number of qualifying spots per age group varies by division size and the results from those events. Specific qualification standards are published on hyrox.com at the start of each season. Targeting world championship qualification requires racing at minimum 2 to 3 sanctioned events in a single season.

Choosing Your Category

When you register, you choose your division (Open, Pro, Doubles, or Relay) and your age group is automatically determined from your date of birth. The one active choice is Open versus Pro. Within your age group, your ranking is automatic from your finish time. If you are genuinely competitive in your age group at standard events, consider targeting specific larger events where the fields are deeper, as points from those races are more valuable for world championship qualification purposes.
