Hyrox vs High Rocks: Which Race is Right for You?

By Mathias Berger · Last updated 2026-05-28

Comparing Hyrox and High Rocks - two of the hottest functional fitness races. Format, difficulty, and how to choose.

Overview

High Rocks is a mud-run-meets-obstacle-race hybrid by Tough Mudder and Hyrox. It features running outdoors with obstacles instead of gym stations. If you're choosing between them, the core question is: indoor gym racing or outdoor obstacle course?

Format Comparison

Hyrox: indoor, 8x1km + 8 functional stations, climate-controlled, standardized. High Rocks: outdoor, trail running + obstacles (monkey bars, rope climb, cargo net), weather-dependent, varies by venue. Hyrox takes 60-120 minutes. High Rocks is typically shorter at 40-75 minutes.

Difficulty

Different challenges. Hyrox is a grinding aerobic test - pure fitness capacity over 13km. High Rocks requires grip strength for obstacles, upper body pulling power, and comfort with heights/mud. Hyrox is harder cardiovascularly. High Rocks is more technical and unpredictable.

Availability

Hyrox runs 72 events across 29 countries in the 2026 season. High Rocks is primarily UK and expanding into Europe. If you're outside the UK, Hyrox is far more accessible. Both sell out popular locations quickly — register early.

Training Overlap

About 70% overlaps. Both need running fitness and grip strength. Hyrox-specific: sled conditioning, SkiErg/rowing technique. High Rocks-specific: pull-ups, rope climbing, balance/coordination. If you train for Hyrox, you're mostly ready for High Rocks minus the technical obstacles.

Verdict

Do Hyrox if you want precise benchmarking, indoor racing, and a year-round calendar. Do High Rocks if you want outdoor adventure, obstacle variety, and don't mind getting muddy. Many athletes race both - Hyrox in winter months, High Rocks in summer.
